Carlow County Council Kicks Off Festive Season with Lightfest, #ShopLocalShopCarlow & partner events for all the family

Carlow County Council is delighted to announce a magical holiday season packed with family-friendly events, vibrant community celebrations, and unforgettable experiences to mark Christmas in Carlow as part of County Carlow a Festive Family Experience. This festive programme, in collaboration with a strong network of community partners including St. Patrick's GAA Tullow, Develop Tullow, Bagenalstown Improvement Group, Carlow Chamber of Commerce, Bagenalstown Area Chamber of Commerce, Carlow Library Service, Carlow Tourism, Visual, An Garda Síochána, and Carlow Regional Youth Services promises to bring joy, unity, and holiday spirit to every corner of the county.

Launching the programme Cllr. Fergal Browne, Cathaoirleach of Carlow County Council said, “the festive period is a time for bringing people together and creating memories that last a lifetime,”. “This year, we are delighted to continue our investment in festive events, festive lighting, and holiday programmes that make Carlow a warm and inviting place for everyone “continued Cllr. Browne. We want families, friends, and visitors to feel the true spirit of the season throughout the county.”

The festivities officially kick off on 23rd November 2024 with an unmissable event featuring Allie Sherlock, a spectacular fireworks display, and family fun activities in Carlow Town. This opening celebration promises to set the tone for a season of joy, magic and connection.

Following the kickoff, the “#ShopLocalShopCarlow” campaign rolls out with special days dedicated to shopping, fun, and entertainment in Tullow on 15th November and Bagenalstown on 16th November. Both days will feature live broadcasts with KCLR and Beat FM, lively street characters, and face painting, providing a family-friendly shopping experience.

Throughout November and December, families can enjoy a wide range of events, from Santa’s Visits to Local Post Boxes on 23rd November to the festive Lightfest Family Day & Fireworks on 30th November in Tullow. Carlow Town will also host the Christmas Circus at The Exchange on 30th November and 7th December, adding a touch of circus magic with festive face painting, juggling acts, and clown performances.

Other family-friendly events include the Jingle Bell Jog organised by Youth Services on 1st December in Carlow, and the Bagenalstown Lightfest Carnival from 6th to 8th December,2024.

Together, we are supporting local businesses, fostering community spirit, and ensuring that every family in Carlow can enjoy something special.”

Carlow Library Service is bringing holiday magic to local branches with Christmas-themed activities for all ages. On 30th November, kids can get crafty at the Christmas Craft Fun Workshop with Jean Robertson at Carlow Library. Families can also enjoy “Wibbly Wobbly Wendy Does Christmas,” a delightful storytime session on 30th November in Muinebheag and 7th December in Carlow, where children are encouraged to wear their favourite Christmas costumes.

The holiday cheer continues with Music Generation Carlow’s special performance by Kildavin National School students on 6th December at Carlow Library. For a traditional experience, families can sing along at the Christmas Carol Service in Tullow Library on 11th December, featuring the talented Regina Hanley and friends.

For hands-on fun, families can participate in Festive Family Time Workshops in library branches across the county, where they’ll enjoy a holiday story and a craft activity. These workshops are open to parents, guardians, and children ensuring everyone can share in the joy of creating holiday memories together.

Visual Carlow’s holiday lineup invites the public to experience art, film, and live performances. From 20th September 2024 to 19th January 2025, visitors can view four inspiring exhibitions, including “Asterisms” by Amie Siegel, Colm Tóibín’s selections from the Art Council collection, “Sincere, or What You Will” by Christopher Mahon, and “A Story Without Words” in the Lobby Gallery.

Film screenings are also a highlight at Visual, with family favourites such as “The Polar Express” on 17th December and “It’s a Wonderful Life” on 22nd December, bringing holiday magic to the big screen. In the George Bernard Shaw Theatre attendees can enjoy a variety of live performances, from the heartwarming Christmas Carol on 18th and 19th December to the festive Christmas Spectacular with Dublin Gospel Choir and Friends on 20th December.
