The underpinning principle of Carlow County Fire and Rescue Service Community Fire Safety activities is to work towards reducing the number of fires, reducing injury and death from fires, together with targeting Community Fire Safety work at those most at risk from fire. Based on this principle it is Carlow County Fire and Rescue Service Community Fire Safety policy to
- provide general fire safety education in the community, in addition to targeting older people, those living in remote rural areas (particularly in the south of the county), together with high risk individuals with known elevated risk factors,
- improve overall domestic smoke alarm coverage in the County and
- reduce the number of tertiary incidents the fire service is called to.
In carrying out this work we aim to take account of national guidance and international good practice, while also considering local needs, local resources available and special circumstances.
Since 2015 there has been an overall downward trend in the incidence of fires within Co. Carlow. It is the intention to continue to reduce the number of attendances at fire incidents by the continuation of Fire Safety and Prevention Initiatives.
