Primary schools throughout County Carlow once again have the opportunity to engage 5th and 6th class students in the 2024 Right to Read Programme, promoting literacy and reading development through the collaboration of Carlow County Council’s Local Enterprise Office and Carlow County Library.

The Right to Read Campaign continues to provide a nationally coordinated framework for literacy support and development, aligning with the Programme for Government. This initiative complements existing programmes like Delivering Equality of Opportunity in Schools (DEIS) and early childhood strategies. It offers continuity and reinforcement outside the formal education system, supporting children, parents, and adults with low literacy levels. The programme strives for a cohesive, integrated, and sustainable approach to literacy development that is consistent across all local authorities.

As part of the 2024 Right to Read Campaign, Carlow County Council Local Enterprise Office, in collaboration with Carlow County Library Service, is excited to announce this year’s Short Story Competition for 5th and 6th class pupils in County Carlow.

Students are invited to submit a short story on the theme of “My Favourite Local Business”. Additionally, they are encouraged to write a brief piece about the career they aspire to have in the future and why. Prizes will be awarded to first, second, and third-place winners, and all participants will receive a certificate of participation.

Cllr. Fergal Browne, Cathaoirleach of Carlow County Council, expressed his enthusiasm for the programme, stating, “I urge our students and teachers to get involved in this initiative, which creates an awareness of literacy needs and literacy development at all ages. Literacy is fundamental to personal and social growth and improving literacy standards remains a national priority. This programme highlights the importance of literacy in everyday life and gives young people a platform to express their creativity.”

Cllr. Browne also highlighted the significance of adult literacy for business development, noting, "Adult literacy is a cornerstone for successful entrepreneurship. Strong literacy skills empower individuals to communicate effectively, think critically, and navigate the challenges of modern business. By enhancing literacy, we equip people with the tools they need to innovate, grow, and succeed in today’s dynamic marketplace.”

Melissa Doyle, Business Advisor with the Local Enterprise Office Carlow County Council, added, “The Right to Read programme recognises that literacy skills are critical for individuals of all ages to realise their full potential. This competition offers children a chance to explore their creativity, connect with local businesses, and imagine their future careers.”

In addition to the competition, John Shortall, Carlow County Librarian, commented on the vital role libraries play in encouraging business development: "Libraries are more than just places for books; they are hubs of knowledge, inspiration, and innovation that support the growth of businesses. Libraries provide free access to valuable resources and collections as well as being places for learning, meeting and information, helping level the playing field for entrepreneurs and small businesses."

The closing date for entries is Friday, 25th October 2024 at 4pm. Entries will be assessed, and the top stories from 5th and 6th class in each school will be invited to an award ceremony at the County Library Carlow on Thursday, 28th November 2024.
